Labour Day Weekend 2023

It goes to say we all love a good long weekend. Any long weekend – Any time of year. But my particular favourite one is the Labour Day weekend. I just like the meaning of it. Quite simply, it celebrates you. The worker.

The holiday was created in celebration of workers and has some origins in the labour union movement. Specifically, the 8-hour day movement is an advocate for 8 hours of work, 8 hours for recreation and 8 hours of rest. To me, that’s a great recipe for a balanced life.

This coming Labour Day is Monday, Sept. 4th and it’s going to be here very soon. What have you got planned? If you’re still looking for some inspiration, I have just a few of the many things you can take part in here in the lower mainland.

Abbotsford Summer Flower Festival

Hosted at Lakeland Flowers, the festival runs from mid-July until the Labour Day weekend. You will find a lovely and impressive variety of blooms here … Sunflowers, Cosmos, Lavender, Snap Dragons, Zinnias and many more. Endless fields of colourful flowers are promised and you get to cut and take home some as well.

Lakeland Flowers is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day – including holidays – and there is plenty of free parking. Admission is $10.00 and your ticket gets you a 5-stem bunch of sunflowers. How wonderful is that!

Harrison Hot Springs Bands on the Beach

Concerts will be on the beach both Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2nd and 3rd and all you need is your lawn chair. It’s all free and you can listen to everything from Indie to Country to Bluegrass.

White Rock Charcuterie on the Pier

Going for a Guinness World Record, Sheila’s Catering hopes to make history with the longest charcuterie board in the world using an impressive 500-foot-long board. Clearly, this is not something to miss. Plus there will be three bars serving beverages, as well as some live music to keep it festive and fun.
